Acura Introduces the TLX Prototype at Detroit Auto Show

As the old saying goes, out with the old, in with the new.

Acura took that to heart and unveiled their new prototype, the Acura TLX, at the 2014 Detroit Auto Show. The TLX, or as Acura puts it, the Red Carpet Athlete, will replace both the Acura TL and TSX, and fit nicely in-between the ILX and RLX.

The Acura TLX is described as having luxury refinement and sports-sedan athleticism with exhilarating performance. Mike Accavitti, senior vice president of American Honda Motor Co., Inc. said that, "The Acura TLX Prototype is a precursor of some amazing things we have in store for our Acura sedan customers." Accavitti adds, "As you would expect from an Acura, this completely new model will offer innovative technologies that break down the barriers between the driver and the machine to deliver a more intuitive, connected and person al driving experience."

Comfortably seating 5 adults, the Acura TLX will offer both two-wheel and all-wheel drive configurations, two powerful and fuel efficient engines (2.4L 4-cylinder and 3.5L SOHC V-6), two new advanced transmissions (8-speed dual clutch (DCT) and 9-speed automatic transmission), and the next generation of Acuras Super-Handling All Wheel Drive and Precision All-Wheel Steer dynamic performance and handling technologies.

Customization comes in the form of an Integrated Dynamics System, which will allow the driver to switch between four driving modes - ECON (Economy), Normal, Sport, and Sport+. The Integrated Dynamics System will adjust the Electric Power Steering, throttle response, SH-AWD and P-AWS control logic, transmission shift mapping, Active Noise Control settings and HVAC control based on whichever mode is chosen.

Enhancements to body stiffness, body sealing and sound insulation, along with the addition of electronic Activ e Noise Control will make the Acura TLX one of the quietest luxury vehicles on the road. Also, with advancements in safety, namely the next-gen ACE (Advanced Compatibility Engineering) system, the TLX is expected to achieve a 5-star rating from the NHTSA, and a Top Safety Pick+ from the IIHS.
